ICT Summer Camps have always been one of the most looked-forward-to events on the Y@H Annual Calendar. It has been curated over the years to bring together student volunteers from varying fields to target communities, for an all-hands-on, intensive digital literacy and utilization campaign. For the first time in 7 years, Summer Camp was called off in 2020 due to the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic. Although the world is not out of the woods yet, a spin has been put to the Annual Summer Camps. 2021 has birthed the Y@H Remote Summer Placement.

The 2021 Remote Summer Placement is a feature in the burgeoning partnership with the University College of London’s International Development Hub. Y@H and UCL ID Hub’s maiden event was a Hackathon in November 2020. This Summer Placement will give student-participants the opportunity to further develop the solutions that were developed during the Hackathon.

The 2021 Remote Summer Placement kicked off on June 15, 2021 with 3 students from the University College of London and 3 students from Ghana – a student each from George Grant University of Mines and Technology, University of Energy and Natural Resources, and Regent University College. The 2-month Placement will have students undertaking Engineering, Non-Engineering and Business/Leadership related sessions, intrinsically linked to provide a cross-cultural, cross-knowledge and community-rich perspective for participants.

Welcoming Session held with all Participants

At the end of the summer internship, participants are expected to have gained practical knowledge and skills in mixed network topology, mesh technology experience and their ability to implement a network from ideation & planning, to deployment, management and handing over. Participants are also expected to have improved their communication and leadership skills, community-engagement influenced development and sourcing of funding for projects. The Business/Leadership Sessions will give Participants an insight into the World of Business through interactions with Business Leaders, Entrepreneurs and Field Experts.

We look forward to the positive outcomes from this 2-month placement. Check our @youngatheartgh on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn for regular updates
